Shopping the Olympics

Did you watch the opening ceremony of the Olympic games the other day? Pretty impressive fireworks display, huh? Well, those “giant footprints” were faked. (Lookout Hollywood! Beijing is kickin’ out some great CGI!) Granted, it was not done with Photoshop, but still an impressive feat to fake fireworks on “live” tv to billions of viewers throughout China and the rest of the world.

UPDATE: In honor of the faux fireworks … How good are you at telling real from CGI (Computer Generated Imagery)? Take the Fake or Foto? quiz!

UPDATE, Part II: That cute little girl who sang China’s National Anthem? She was also a fake (or a “Milli Vanilli”, if you will). The girl who actually sang the song was not considered cute enough, so she was replaced with another little girl who lip-synched the song. [CNN article]

I thought the Chinese were supposed to be the maters of fireworks? Now they gotta fake them to make ‘em look good? Highly disappointed over here.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty funny that the folks actually responsible for the birth of fireworks would fake them. I can understand both sides of the argument – “putting on a show” vs. well, “reality” – but I just think with the high standards we hold Olympic athletes to use nothing artificial to heighten their performance, that perhaps that should be reflected throughout the whole of the Olympics.
