The September issue of SELF features a heavily Photoshopped Kelly Clarkson on the cover. Wait. Let me re-phrase that: The September issue of SELF features such catch phrases on their cover as “Total Body Confidence” and “Stay True to You and Everyone Else Will Love You Too!” also features a heavily Photoshopped Kelly Clarkson which seemingly negates everything the magazine purports to stand for.
This is what Editor-in-Chief Lucy Danziger told Entertainment Tonight when ET pointed out to SELF that, you know, Kelly looked like she had a total body transplant for their cover…
“Yes, of course we do post-production corrections on our images. Airbrushing images is an industry standard, and the mag stands behind its decision. SELF magazine inspires and informs our 6 million readers each month to reach their all around best. Kelly Clarkson exudes confidence, and is a great role model for women of all sizes and stages of their life. She works out and is strong and healthy, and our picture shows her confidence and beauty. She literally glows from within. That is the feeling we’d all want to have. We love this cover and we love Kelly Clarkson.”
After that statement the only thing you have inspired in this reader is the feeling that I might barf. I don’t know what kind of contradictory pill you are trying to sell me, SELF, but I ain’t buying it. Saying you admire someone for their strength, health, confidence and beauty while calling them a role model for women of all sizes and then Photoshopping them to fit within an “industry standard” is the very definition of hypocritical. (It probably fits the definition of “clinically insane” as well.)
Ever hear of (the) actions (panel) speak louder than words, SELF? Obviously not.
For the record, I’d like to say I still think Kelly Clarkson is a positive role model, and don’t believe the “industry standard” actions of SELF reflect upon her at all. Keep rockin’ those American thighs, Kelly! (The real ones I mean, not the Photoshopped ones!)
